“By having to come up with 60 plot points, I really had to think about my characters. What little hiccups could come along the way to mess things up? What biggies could rock their world?” ~ excerpt from Creating My Plot: Very Detailed to the Nitty-Gritty

“In the book, Chelsea and Clint vow to never live timidly, and to never take the cowards way out again. As a storyteller, Holly follows her characters advice. Her characters live and breathe, and in the end, become a part of you.” ~ Blurb from Spotlight Review: Holly Schinderl’s PLAYING HURT

“Writing can be so lonely—staring at a screen and a box all day, getting carpal tunnel and a stiff neck. We create imaginary friends every day and most of us talk to them. We need social interaction with others, and who better to understand our madness then a fellow writer?” ~ excerpt from Community Building

"Drafting the query and sending it out has to be one of the most talked about, most feared, and most important parts of the entire writing for traditional publication process. As the saying goes, you only get one chance to make a good impression, and with so many agents not even wanting a writing sample pasted along with your query, you really have to nail it in order to even have a chance at seeking their representation." ~ excerpt from The All Important Query

Swoon Thursday (12): Half-Blood

It's that time again! Trish and I created a HOT meme over at YA Bound, and if you're new to the game, here's how to join in the fun:

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell me what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering. Shout it out on Twitter with the hashtag #YABound, post it here in the comments, or grab the adorable button above and share it on your blog!

We want to know :-)

Here's mine:

I have been reading all kinds of swoony books lately, so I almost chose another one this week, knowing probably everyone else on this great big planet of ours has already read (and swooned to) Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout. But then I figured, what the hey. There's a shot some of you may not have read it yet--in which case, you must--and for those of you who have, you can remember and swoon again =) First, the appropriate Twitter quote:

Hot tingles spread through me as his lips moved against my ear. "You should tell me to stop." I didn't say a word.-Half-Blood SWOON #YABound

And now, the longer, steamier, extended version:

Hot tingles spread through me as his lips moved against my ear. "You should tell me to stop." I didn't say a word. Aiden made a deep sound in his throat. His hand slid up my back, leaving a trail of fire in its wake, and his lips moved across my cheek, stopping to hover above mine. I forgot how to breathe, and most importantly, how to think.  He moved, ever so slightly, and his lips brushed across mine once, and then twice. It was such a soft, beautiful kiss, but when the kiss deepened, it wasn't a shy one. This was one of dangerously pent-up need, a desire that'd been denied far too long.

*Fans self*

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN: In 140 characters . . . um, or a bit more if you're like me LOL, SWOON me!

Swoon Thursday (9): Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout

It's that time again! Over at YA Bound, we created a HOT meme, and if you're new to the game, here's how to join in the fun:

From the book you’re currently reading, or one you just finished, tell us what made you SWOON. What got your heart pounding, your skin tingling, and your stomach fluttering.

Here's mine:

His hands were on my hips, and he lifted me up as if I were made of air. My legs wrapped around his waist--Obsidian SWOON #YABound

And here's the extended bloggy version, because y'all, this book deserves some extra swoon time! :-)

I sparked alive, my heart swelled to the point of near bursting. The rush of sensations crawling across my body was maddening. Scary. Thrilling. His hands were on my hips, and he lifted me up as if I were made of air. My legs wrapped around his waist, and we moved to the right, knocking into a floor lamp.

Hot, Right?

NOW IT'S YOUR TURN: In 140 characters, SWOON me!

Book Spotlight: Obsidian by Jennifer Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I just got finished reading a book that I have been salivating over since I first saw the cover . . .  and let me tell you, it lived up to the drool. There is so much to love about Obsidian, I'm not sure where to freaking start!

First, let me give you the Goodreads blurb:

Starting over sucks.

When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I’d pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring…. until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.

And then he opened his mouth.

Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something…unexpected happens.

The hot alien living next door marks me.

You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon’s touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I’m getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades.

If I don’t kill him first, that is

Okay, one of my favorite parts of this story was actually something totally surprising that many people may overlook, but for me, it totally elevated the book to another level. Katy's book blog, her continual mentions of popular MEMEs such as "Waiting On" Wednesday or "In My Mailbox", her love affair with blog comments, and the general excitement over reading in general just made this story special. It made Katy even more relatable, and it felt like Jennifer wrote this story as a love letter to all the book blog reviewers who have supported her over the years. Writers are always looking for unique traits to bring to characters, special hobbies to make them stand out and show their personalities, and I think Jennifer found a perfect, unique one here.

Then, of course, any discussion of this book would be remiss without mentioning the CHEMISTRY exploding off the pages! Seriously, my favorite line in the book: Like and lust must not have anything in common. Not only did this line make me laugh out loud, but it perfectly fits these two for most of the book. It's YA, they are on the cover together, and you can feel the attraction between these two, so you knew they are/were gonna hook up at some point in the series . . . but I don't know if I can think of another book or another couple that exemplifies chemistry than this. I'm kind of in awe, to tell you the truth.

I love the friendship between Katy and Dee. The relationship between Katy and her mom was sweet and sad. The loyalty between all the friendships in this book just rocked. I'm a character driven writer and reader--I want to care about my characters, and I want to know that THEY care about people, too. I love to see connection, and Obsidian had it in spades.

Unique, fresh, fun plot. Amazing action, steam my kindle screen hotness. Sexy, funny, and sweet. Obsidian has it all. Cannot wait for ONYX!
